In this learning track "How to implement consent mode with Cookiebot", I will guide you on how to quickly implement Google Consent Mode v2 using Cookiebot and Google Tag Manager. There are many different Cookie Management Platforms (CMP's) out there. Therefore, in this article, I’ll explain why I've chosen to use Cookiebot by Usercentrics as my favorite CMP.

A Consent Management Platform (CMP) is a tool that allows you to ask users for their cookie preferences and block or allow cookies and scripts based on those preferences.
When you start working on compliance, you’ll quickly realize that a CMP is a must-have. Websites often rely on various tools and cookies to function properly and gather valuable insights, but you can’t simply load or collect everything without proper consent.
While having a CMP has been essential for years to comply with GDPR, the introduction of Google Consent Mode v2 has made setting up a robust cookie management tool even more critical. Previously, you only needed a CMP to be GDPR-compliant (which many organizations still aren’t), but now it’s also necessary to collect the valuable data you can’t afford to lose.
Without a CMP or with an ineffective one, you risk being non-compliant with GDPR and losing valuable data in tools like Google Analytics and Google Ads. Soon, this will likely extend to other platforms, such as Meta and LinkedIn.
Why Cookiebot is my favorite CMP
I’ve worked with many CMP’s and after careful consideration I’ve chosen for Cookiebot (in most cases) primarily because it’s one of the largest and most reliable players in the market. It’s also a Google Certified CMP, meaning they work closely with Google to continue improving their tool.
My decision was driven by quality, reliability, and support rather than price. While Cookiebot isn’t the cheapest option, the difference with cheaper alternatives is only a few euros per domain per month. However, it saves time and hassle, making those extra euros well worth it. Compared to more expensive tools like OneTrust, Cookiebot is actually very affordable.
Cookiebot:
- Automatically scans your website to keep the cookie banner and cookie statement up-to-date.
- Provides a cookie declaration script that you can implement in your Privacy / Cookie statement.
- Sends the correct signals to Google Tag Manager.
- Offers a lot of flexibility regarding the banner and the functionality behind it.
- Is really easy to implement.
If a CMP doesn’t work well, it could cost you valuable data, ad budget, and time. I work with clients who have serious ad budgets— sometimes up to €500,000 per month. In such cases, you don’t want to take risks with data collection, and compliance is absolutely crucial.
